    1. What is the origin of Red Rock Running Company?
Eric describes the origin of the company, saying, "It started way back in high school. My very first job was at a running store, and I loved it. I always looked forward to going to work and never dreaded it. That really stuck with me." Eric expands on how: "I started putting everything together in 2003, and by December 2004, we opened the doors to Red Rock Running Company."

    2. What were some of the original challenges faced when opening the store?
Eric recalls the initial hurdles, particularly with securing relationships with running shoe companies. He says, "The running shoe companies. They’re very protective of already-established businesses... I had to be very persistent. The first three companies I called all said no."

    3. Who was the first account that opened up to Red Rock Running Company?
Eric shares a key turning point in the process of obtaining brands for the store: "I called them [Saucony], and they said yes. No hesitation, no pause—just 'yes.'” Saucony was the first brand to agree to work with him, giving him a much-needed breakthrough.

    4. Why did Eric choose the Cheyenne location for the first Red Rock store?
Eric reflects on the decision to locate the store on Cheyenne, noting that it was a strategic move: "Honestly, it was far enough away from the existing stores. Like I mentioned earlier, the shoe companies were protective, so I had to change my approach." He chose this location to avoid directly competing with existing stores, giving him a better chance to establish himself in a less saturated area.

    5. What challenges did Red Rock Running Company face with competition, particularly with larger stores like Fleet Feet?
Josh discusses how Red Rock handled competition and how it built customer trust: "We didn’t fight against them—we even told customers where they were located if they asked. We’d say, 'Sure, it’s just down the street.' That confidence left an impression. People thought, 'Wow, they must be really good at what they do if they’re willing to tell me about the competition.'" This approach shows how being open and confident in their expertise helped Red Rock differentiate itself.

    6. How did the Great Recession affect the business?
Eric explains how the Great Recession impacted their customers, saying, "I was scared. But the customers told me what was going on... I realized what was happening. Customers were cutting back, but they still needed good shoes because running was their therapy—it handled their stress." Despite financial struggles, people continued to value their fitness, and running served as a form of stress relief, allowing the business to stay afloat.

    7. How is Red Rock Running Company adapting to the challenges of online shopping and brand competition?
Mark provides insight into the changing dynamics in the running retail space, stating, "The reason for people to visit a running specialty store used to be that you could only find certain brands there. Now, you can find Brooks, Saucony, and others at REI, Dick's Sporting Goods, or even Nordstrom Rack. The market is saturated... our biggest competition isn't REI or Dick's. It's the brands themselves." The rise of online shopping has made it harder for independent stores like Red Rock to stand out, as customers can access these brands elsewhere.

    8. What is the focus of Red Rock Running Company moving forward?
Mark explains how Red Rock is shifting its focus to broader health and wellness needs: "We focus on building a message—that we're more than just a running store... We get so many customers who need all-black shoes—service workers, for example. Vegas is a service town... And it doesn't have to be about running. Walking has so many of the same benefits as running." The store is positioning itself not only for runners but for people who prioritize footwear for everyday physical activity, especially for those in service-oriented jobs.
